This weekend, the Canadian-Croatian Folklore Federation would have hosted it’s 46th Annual Canadian-Croatian Folklore Festival.
Unfortunately, due to pandemic, the festival has been postponed but instead, a Virtual Festival will be hosted online.
“We are excited that we will still be able to share our beloved cultural heritage in another way and we invite you to join us on Saturday, May 16, 2020, at 7 p.m. EST: Virtual Festival,” organisers said.
The festival, which may be the first virtual folklore festival of its kind, will be broadcast live on the Folklore Federation’s FB page HERE.
The two-hour event will feature video samples of each member group from their video archives, which goes back almost 30 years.
“It will be entertaining and interesting to see some recent footage mixed in with some nostalgic throwbacks, as well as greetings from our member groups and friends. Croatian folklore has endured and survived for hundreds of years and while we are temporarily down, we will be back, stronger and with renewed energy, for many years to come. We are looking forward to spending some time together on Saturday, May 16, 2020, at 7 p.m.”
The Canadian-Croatian Folklore Federation (East) (Hrvatsko-Kanadski Folklorni Savez (Istok)) was formed in 1973, with the goal of preserving, promoting and safeguarding authentic Croatian folklore heritage and passing this on to the younger generations, most born outside of Croatia. The Federation also organizes annual seminars in order to assist with the education of instructors and potential instructors. For the last 30 years, these seminars have been conducted by Ivo Ivancan (former artistic director of the National Ensemble “LADO” and Maestro Sinisa Leopold, director and conductor of the Tamburaski Orkestar Hrvatske Radio Televizije.
Besides seminars, there are two large annual events take place under the auspices of the Federation: the fall Tamburafest, and of course, the Canadian-Croatian Folklore Festival (East) on the Victoria Day weekend in May. The first Folklore Festival took place in Sudbury in 1975 and this year would have seen its 18 member groups performing at the 46th annual Folklore Festival, in Hamilton, Ontario. This year’s host was to have been the Croatian National Home from Hamilton.
