Croats in Canada will not be able to vote in July’s Croatian parliamentary elections

ZAGREB, June 7 (Hina) – The Croatian Embassy in Canada said on Sunday that it would not be possible to hold Croatian parliamentary elections in the country on July 4 and 5 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Embassy informed all Croatian citizens and voters that in light of the pandemic the Canadian government could not give permission to open polling stations at the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa or the Consulate General in Mississauga, outside Toronto.

The Embassy noted that holding foreign elections in any country in the world, including Canada, required permission from the host country, adding that currently, the Canadian government was not allowing any country to hold elections on Canadian soil.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, over 96,000 coronavirus cases have been recorded in Canada to date and 7,800 people have died.

An estimated 250,000 Croatian emigrants and their descendants live in Canada, according to the Central State Office for Croats Abroad.
