Policeman wounded in Zagreb’s St. Mark’s Square shooting stable after surgery

ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) – A policeman who sustained gunshot wounds in a shooting in Zagreb’s St. Mark’s Square on Monday morning, has undergone several hours of surgery and is not in a life-threatening condition and his vital functions have stabilised, the director of the Sisters of Charity Hospital said.

A wounded nerve, vein, tendon and bones in his left arm have been reconstructed. The policeman is stable and no longer in a life-threatening condition, the hospital’s director Mario Zovak told the press after the operation of the police officer was over.

The policeman will be transferred from the intensive care unit to the surgical ward, Sisters of Charity Hospital director Mario Zovak said on Tuesday.

“His vital functions are not in any danger at all, his arm looks fine and it seems that movement is fine too, which means the nerves are working,” he told Hina.

Zovak added that one more surgery is planned in a few weeks’ time, which will depend on the course of recovery following yesterday’s surgery.

The 31-old police officer Oskar Fiuri was wounded in a shooting by 22-year-old Danijel Bezuk, who fired at the entrance to Government House. Fiuri sustained four gunshot wounds, two to one arm and two to the torso. The attacker committed suicide in a nearby street.

According to police information, the attacker did not have a criminal record.

Before the incident, Bezuk posted a message on Facebook before committing suicide which said “No more deceit and impunity for those who trample on human value.”
