Autumn has arrived and so has the autumn menu in Market, a bistro which opened last year serving traditional Croatian dishes with a twist in Zagreb.
“We are a little late, but it was extremely difficult to decide on the dishes that will be included in our autumn menu,” owner Fran Curkovic explains, before adding.
“The daily soup will be directly related to the Dolac market offer, and we started with paprika soup, which is full of character and very interesting. Our vegan/vegetarian dish is Falafel with yogurt sauce and salad. It can also be ordered as a 100% Vegan option with yogurt-free sauce. Falafel which is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with a spicy-refreshing salad is a great combination to share for an appetizer or eat as a standalone dish.
Cappelletti stuffed with rabbit meat in pumpkin cream with pickled pumpkin is a real autumn plate. The portion is not large but the flavors are. A real treat for gourmets. Chicken with mlinci (traditional Zagreb pasta) is our classic with a twist on the autumn menu. The twist is found in purple cabbage cream, and the chicken is a deboned drumstick and shank.”
Market presented a risotto with slow-roasted beef cheeks, baked apple puree and pickled radishes at the YES feel good festival on Strossmayer Square where the reviews were extremely positive so they had no choice but to include it on their fall menu.
Beef shank stew with ‘lovački’ dumplings, portobello mushrooms, and pumpkin cream is Market’s most complex dish in terms of flavors.
“Every meat and beef skank lover must try this dish. Flavors come in layers. The weight of the beef shank and mushroom stew goes extremely well with the sweet pumpkin and the airy dumplings. For all fish lovers, we made a white fish fillet with cauliflower cream and sauteed broccoli. The fillet of white fish will depend on the availability of fish on Dolac, but most often it will be gilthead sea bream or sea bass. Baked cauliflower cream and sauteed broccoli go well with light fish. For dessert, we decided on Mud cake with apple puree and sweet pumpkin cream and mascarpone. Chocolate combination with fresh autumn flavors,” Fran says.
*NEW in Market – Tasting Menu on Saturdays
Market’s tasting menu consists of 4 courses and costs 129kn per person (minimum of 2 people for order). The first course is a daily soup (paprika soup), then a risotto with slow-roasted beef cheeks with roasted apple puree and pickled radishes, for the third course they serve Beef shank goulash with dumplings and portobello mushrooms and for dessert Mud cake with apple puree and sweet pumpkin cream and mascarpone.
In addition to the tasting menu, they also offer wine pairing and beer pairing option.
Wine pairing (3 glasses of Croatian wine with a tasting menu) will cost 199kn, while Beer pairing (3 glasses of Croatian beer from the brewery Varionica) 169kn.
“We think that people lack news on the gastro scene and this is our answer on how to spice up the situation on the market a bit and encourage others to think so. And I am extremely glad that the reactions to the summer tasting menu were extremely positive and that we were busy every Saturday. We plan to introduce a tasting menu with meatless dishes for the same price, but we will announce it on time,” Fran concludes.
