A visit to a unique Croatian island food festival

Bljak Fest (Yuck Fest) is dedicated to unique but tasty specialties like tripe, bull’s testicles, grilled liver and kidneys, which takes place in Omišalj on Croatian island of Krk.
The traditional festival of the heritage of the folk cuisine that some may not like the way it looks, but tastes delicious, took place for the 11th time on Saturday 28 January in Omišalj.
Bljak delicacies were again well received, and this is supported by the fact that more than 1,000 visitors came to the event, and around 6,000 portions of bljak specialties were distributed.
On the menu were tripe, which were in high demand as always, as well as grilled bull’s testicles and liver, pickled maneštra, maneštra with legs, but also the original recipes of Rivice restaurant: Slatka broskva, Šporkic (Bruschetta with blood sausage) and “Topla pijandura”.
Hunters delighted the crowd with their venison stew “Rogi va Padeli”, and the carnival association Kataroška prepared “Zelena Faca” – Greens with smoked ribs, snouts and pig’s noses, which was distributed in record time.
Fritule, bljak pancakes and desserts like peaches with white chocolate were prepared for all visitors with a sweet tooth.
This year, a record ten teams cooked, namely: Carnival Associations Babani and Omišjanski Babani, restaurant Rivica, Association of Veterans of the Homeland War of the Island of Krk – Omišalj branch, Zubatac Fishing Association, Association “Puntarske Uzance”, Carnival Association Kataroška, Hunting Association “Šljuka” and association for folk customs Drivenik who, along with food, proudly presented Drivenik Brewery beer – Kirica.
In addition to the great atmosphere created by the group Fortunal, friends from Drivenik and mesopastars from Novi Vinodolski brought the atmosphere to a fever pitch with their musical instruments, and all of this was best conveyed by the master of Rijeka’s carnival, Sandi, who said that he welcomes and supports all carnival manifestations and customs in order to continue to spread positivity and love for masquerade madness.
