Zadar now has the scent of winter, along with a special warmth brought by the first Christmas decorations and the long-awaited festive preparations.
As in previous years, the city is gearing up for one of its most eagerly anticipated seasons – Advent in Zadar, which begins on Sunday, 24th November, coinciding with the feast of St. Krševan, the city’s patron saint.
The first day of this Advent season will feature a performance by Mladen Grdović in Petar Zoranić Square.
Grdović, a favourite among the people of Zadar for over 40 years, is a celebrated local artist renowned for his Dalmatian songs.
“It’s a tremendous honour to open Advent in Zadar! This event means so much to the city, and there’s nothing I enjoy more than bringing a bit of happiness to people during these grey days.
Singing in front of my Zadar crowd is an indescribable feeling. I invite everyone to come along – it will be fun, lively, loud, and full of dancing, just as it always is at my concerts. And we’ll need to keep warm – after all, it’s outdoors,” said Mladen Grdović with a smile ahead of his Sunday performance.
That Sunday morning will also see the opening of another, slightly “sweeter” Advent – the Children’s Advent, which promises joy for the youngest visitors through workshops, performances, and festive stories… and, of course, some fun for their parents as well.
It’s well known that Zadar’s Advent isn’t just about great music and an excellent atmosphere. Over the years, it has become synonymous with exceptional gastronomy, attracting both locals and tourists from across the region.
The festive food stalls, located in Petar Zoranić Square and Five Wells Square, offer a true gourmet experience: from the aroma of freshly made fritule and homemade pancakes, to mulled wine and gin, alongside a variety of local specialities and innovative modern interpretations of festive dishes.
In Zadar, from 24th November until 2nd January 2025, every stroll through the city becomes an opportunity for enjoyment – whether it’s live performances in Petar Zoranić Square, children’s programmes in the People’s Square, or the cosy winter wonderland within the atrium of Cedulin Palace, where life-sized nativity scenes bring the spirit of Christmas to life.
Local artisans also showcase their unique handmade crafts, adding an extra touch of charm to the festive atmosphere.
Indeed, every corner of the city tells its own Advent story. The stalls not only serve delicious treats but also create spaces for connection and laughter. Advent in Zadar isn’t just an event – it’s an unforgettable experience.
