By the end of 2029, all households in Croatia will be equipped with smart electricity meters, thanks to an investment of €86.5 million by HEP (Hrvatska Elektroprivreda), HRT reported today.

This move aims to modernise energy consumption management across the country.

Smart meters will eliminate estimated bills, prepayments, and the often frustrating bi-annual bill adjustments. Instead, residents will receive monthly invoices based on their actual energy consumption.

This system is set to ensure more transparent and fair payments. As one resident remarked:

“Now we’ll pay for exactly what we’ve used each month – it’s fairer, and there are no more surprise charges.”

The installation process is straightforward. According to Dujam Grgat from Elektrodalmacija Split, replacing a meter takes just 5–10 minutes per household.

For example, residents of Makarska Street 11 in Split experienced only a brief power interruption during their upgrade.

Older residents might miss the familiar red light indicating cheaper electricity rates, but the favourable tariff remains. Beyond billing convenience, the upgrade brings significant benefits:

Monthly Billing: Consumers will receive regular bills instead of advance payments and adjustments.

Business Efficiency: HEP will improve network management, reduce losses, and detect system theft more effectively.

Ivo Babić, Assistant Director of Elektrodalmacija Split, highlighted that these improvements also simplify operations for HEP.

So far, 36% of Croatia’s households have transitioned to smart meters, with Elektrodalmacija Split completing 40% of its regional installations. The ambitious goal is to have smart meters installed in all households nationwide within the next five years.

Crucially, the modernisation comes at no additional cost to consumers, provided they continue to pay their bills on time.
