In the heart of Karlovac, the historic site of Dubovac Old Town is revealing fascinating glimpses into medieval life.

Dubovac Old Town holds the title of Karlovac’s oldest archaeological site. Researchers have uncovered traces of a medieval defensive wall complete with a moat surrounding the town.

A fortress, built around the 13th century and resembling the structure still standing today, was later constructed on the site.

“This wasn’t built by some grand feudal lord, but clearly by local minor nobility,” Maris Mesarić, the lead archaeologist overseeing the dig, told HRT.

Among the standout finds is the site of St. Michael’s Church, perched on a mound near the old town. It’s believed a cemetery once stood alongside it, though it hasn’t survived. However, archaeologists have discovered items buried with the deceased, offering clues about their lives.

“We’re finding all sorts of things—rings, signet stamps, clothing clasps, even some preserved fabric,” Mesarić noted.

These discoveries promise to deepen our understanding of life in and around Dubovac Old Town, stretching from prehistoric times to the present day.

Beyond the digging, the project includes practical restoration work on the fortress itself. Marinko Pleskina, the manager of Dubovac Old Town, shared exciting plans: “Our Branić Tower will be fully restored through these two projects. It’ll get a fresh look with a new permanent exhibition called ‘Cartographer’s Tower’.”

The restoration efforts won’t stop there. All the wooden parts of the fortress will be refurbished, the surrounding area will be spruced up, and a new access road and car park are in the works.

By autumn, Dubovac Old Town will shine in a whole new light, blending its rich history with modern upgrades for visitors to enjoy.

Named after the oak trees (or “dub” in Croatian) dotting its slopes, this prehistoric mound turned fortress is one of Croatia’s best-preserved and most beautiful examples of feudal architecture.
