The Zagreb project “Okolo” (Around) travels to the sea, and this year it beautifies Makarska with artistic surprises
As part of the “Maestrale” project and in cooperation with Grad Makarska and the Makarska Tourist Board, the popular art project “Okolo” is traveling outside Zagreb for the first time this summer – and to the coast.
From July to September in the charming Dalmatian ‘kalas’ in Makarska “Okolo” will set up three selected art installations, previously presented at the Zagreb edition, thus inviting citizens and visitors to discover the town through art.
“Okolo” art meetings in Makarska are scheduled every first weekend during July, August and September, when two young artists and one designer collective will present their works at selected locations.
Already this weekend, the first in a series of installations was installed in Lištun – that of the young and gifted sculptor Matej Vuković entitled “Among the Clouds”, in which his stunning and almost surreal clouds change their expression from every angle of observation spreading joy with their intense colours and in different forms and with their own dynamics invite the viewer to constantly observe and uncover new forms. The installation can be viewed until July 12.
The program continues in August with the work of the design collective The All “You have golden hands”, dedicated to all hard-working craftspeople, which will be symbolically placed in Prvosvibanjska Street, while the “Dancers” of the sculptor Ana Marija Maravić will dance their last dance this summer in the beginning of September in a hidden courtyard in Dr. Jakov Dudan Street.
By placing works of art in the urban landscape, “Okolo” enlivens public spaces and turns them into places where art spontaneously touches the everyday life of the city, making it different and more beautiful. It puts Croatian artists and their personal experience and vision of the city in the foreground, while at the same time bringing contemporary art closer to a wider audience.
This year, “Okolo” is teaming up with the new project “Maestrale”, which brings a touch of cultural refreshment to Makarska and revives the town’s rich history and becomes a meeting place for local residents, tourists and passers-by, providing an opportunity to get to know Makarska through the hidden town halls, local masters and artists, and contemporary art installations.
With this collaboration between Grad Makarska and the “Okolo” art project, Makarska becomes an official “Okolo na moru” destination, and the project will expand and develop in the future through cooperation with artists from the Split-Dalmatia County, as well as on an international level.
The event is realised with the support of the Makarska Tourist Board.
You can follow the program of the “Maestrale” project on Facebook and Instagram, as well as on the websites of Grad Makarska and the Makarska Tourist Board. Everyone is invited to this unique art walk in Makarska.
