MELBOURNE, 13 February 2021 – Croatia’s Donna Vekić has won her third round match at the Australian Open in Melbourne on Saturday.
The 24-year-old has achieved her best ever result at the Australian Grand Slam when she reached the fourth round after a come-from-behind victory over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.
The 28th-seed Croatian would lose the opening set 7:5 but would win the next two sets, first a tie-break 7:6 and the deciding set 6:4 to reach the last 32.
Vekić, who was down one set and 0:3 in the second, would also save a match point before going on to record her victory.
Vekić now meets 22nd seed Jennifer Brady from America in the fourth round. The Osijek-born right-hander will equal her best ever Grand Slam result if she can get past Brady. In 2019 she reached the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Vekić and Brady have met once before, on clay, with the Croatian winning that match.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s doubles, Croatian duo Mate Pavić and Nikola Mektić play their third round match on Sunday. Croatia’s Ivan Dodig is also still in the doubles with his partner, Filip Polašek from Poland.
