MELBOURNE, 20 January 2020 – It was a mixed day for Croatian players in action on the opening day of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Monday.
Croatia’s no.1 ranked men’s and women’s players were in action on Monday and whilst one cruised into the second round, one was bundled out of the tournament.
Borna Coric went down in straight sets to American Sam Querrey. Whilst Querrey saved four out of five break-points, Coric could only save 6 out of 8 break-points and went down 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Coric was out of sorts and won just 54% on his second serve and 70% on his first serve.
Whilst it was a day to forget for Coric, Petra Martic made light work of her opening round match against Christina McHale. Martic only gave up three games in the match to win 6-3, 6-0.
In the second round, Martic will face Julia Goerges who beat Viktoria Kuzmova 6-1, 6-2.
The other three Croatian players will take to the court on Tuesday. Marin Cilic will meet Corentin Moutet from France, whilst Ivo Karlovic, who is now ranked outside the top 100, will play Vasek Pospisil from Canada who has an ATP ranking of 146.
In the women’s draw, Donna Vekic will play former world no.1 Maria Sharapova.
