ZAGREB, 27 May (Hina) – British TV presenter, writer and adventurer Ben Fogle, known for his series Return to the Wild, New Lives in the Wild, Swimming with Crocodiles, Race to the Pole, Through Hell and High Water and other adventures, visited the Croatian region of Međimurje on Friday, saying that the region justifiably carries the Green Destination label.
The Međimurje County Tourist Board said in a press release that during his stay in the far north of Croatia, Fogle visited several destinations and was, as he said, delighted to see how much that small region in a small European country has dedicated itself to preserving its traditions and diversity of natural resources.
The level of preserved biodiversity of the Mura and Drava rivers is surprising.
It is absolutely clear to me, now that I have seen it myself, why this region is called the European Amazon.
Also, it is very nice to see a region that preserves its rich intangible heritage, as people have done here in Međimurje, said Fogle.
He added that the people of Međimurje are rightly proud of their heritage, protected by UNESCO, and that the Međimurje Eco Museum is a great example of heritage preservation and presentation.
On his way around Međimurje, Fogle also visited the Geler farm, where the autochthonous breed of Međimurje horse is bred, an almost extinct species because there are only 40 horses of that breed left in the world.
After trying the autochthonous Međimurje dishes, he underscored that he was surprised by the rich gastronomy of the Međimurje region, as well as the excellent wine list, and rounded off the day-long visit by climbing to the viewpoint on Mađerkin Breg, with a unique, built-in wind organ.
The visit to Međimurje convinced me that this region is rightly certified as a Green Destination, concluded Fogle.
