Wine is the solution to most of our problems; it’s a reward for our victories and comfort for our failures. It has been glorifying dinners, dates, friendships, relationships, anniversaries and many other occasions since ancient history, so who are we to stop that? Every possible occasion sounds more appealing if it includes wine. Here are some nice places in Zagreb to have a glass of wine. Or two. Or six.
WINE BAR BASEMENT
Right at the bottom of the old and famous Zagreb funicular in Tomićeva Street – you’ll find Basement, a non-smoking wine bar. It’s actually a cellar offering quite an impressive selection of extraordinary wine from all over the country. The cozy cellar interior, reasonable prices, Croatian wine complemented with local cheeses and meats sound like a fabulous way of relaxing in the evening.
POD ZIDOM BISTRO & WINE BAR
Pod Zidom bistro & wine bar is located between the Main Square and the Cathedral. It offers a wide selection of wines and dishes, and on the weekends there’s live music that suits the place perfectly. The interior is very charming and romantic, the place isn’t too big and the atmosphere is classy yet comfortable. Make sure to book a table in advance though as it’s in the city center and it gets booked quite fast.
SHERRY’S WINES & BITES
Located in the yard of a building in Ilica 73 Sherry’s Wines & Bites is one of the best places when in mood for a glass of wine. The place is all about good food, good wine and good music. The working hours contribute to the popularity of the place as it works till 2 AM from Wednesday till Sunday. They offer an impressive selection of both Croatian and foreign wines, Nova runda craft beer, Coogito Croatian Coffee, a variety of hard liquor and cocktails. The food offer is quite amazing as well – it includes delicacies such as salmon tartar, Indian style tortilla or cold cucumber, yoghurt and mint soup. The spacious interior is warm and cozy yet decorated with classy details and there’s a very nice terrace as well. The relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere makes everyone feel great.
BASTA GOURMET BAR
Basta gourmet bar is located in Varšavska 5, next to Kino Europa and Zagreb’s famous Flower Square. A great selection of fine wines, beer and other beverage is served in the ground floor of a vintage and classy decorated interior, while you can have a taste of delicious Italian cuisine on the first floor. The atmosphere of the place is quite classy and chic yet it doesn’t feel pretentious – as if you were in a classy old fashion apartment having drinks with friends. From Thursday to Saturday there are live performances going on so you can enjoy some nice tunes with your glass of wine.
BASTION NO.19
Bastion no.19 is located in a famous Art Nouveau building in Masarykova Street. This charming bar with a very modern yet cozy interior and a lovely terrace offers a wide but carefully chosen list of wines, beer, liquors and coffee with some small bites that complement the drinks. What sets Bastion no.19 apart is its professional service that brings the wine to you in its bottle, alongside an empty glass that is yet to be filled with wine after you have had a taste of it. The waiters also introduce you with the wine’s origin, location and story, so that you exactly know what you are drinking.
BORNSTEIN WINE BAR & SHOP
The first and oldest wine shop in Croatia is located in the basement of Kaptol 19, near the cathedral. Bornstein is an extremely cozy place where wine lovers and those in need of new enological experience enjoy a huge variety of both national and international wine. Besides the best selection of Croatian wine and hundreds of wines from around the world they offer extra virgin olive oil, Istrian truffles and desserts. Their biggest pride is their archival wine collection from the Kutjevo and Belje cellars and the bottle of white Burgundy from 1947.
DOBRA VINA RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
Dobra Vina is situated on the ground floor of Zagreb’s business center Green Gold in Radnička Street. They offer more than 400 different wine labels from Croatia and abroad. What they’re really special about though are the wine vending machines, from which 130 different wines are being sold on glasses. These devices keep the wine at an appropriate temperature and decorate the modern interior of the place. They also offer an affordable daily menu and a large selection of tapas complementing the wines.
DUBRAVKIN PUT RESTAURANT & WINE BAR
Dubravkin put is situated in an idyllic location in the forest of Tuškanac, near the city center yet isolated from the city noise. The “wine wall” at the entrance suggests that the whole concept of the restaurant is based on wines. The exposed wine bottles from all over the world show the great wine selection the place offers and decorate the classy interior. When in need of a rich enological experience make sure to visit this isolated yet very fashionable place.
