25-year-old Croatian Borna Ćorić has created history as the the lowest ranked player ever to reach the Cincinnati Masters final.
Ćorić has beaten four top-20 players in consecutive matches, including Rafael Nadal, to reach the final. The Croatian, who only returned to the ATP tour in March after more than a year out with a shoulder injury, beat 9th seed Cameron Norrie overnight in straight sets in the semi-final.
He will now face Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday in the final.
Ćorić, who was ranked 152nd in the world heading into the tournament, started his impressive streak in the second round when he knocked out 22-time Grand Slam champion and number 2 seed Nadal.
He then went on to beat 15th seed Robert Bautista Agut and 7th seed Félix Auger-Aliassime to reach the semi-finals.
Ćorić and Tsitsipas have played twice, with both recording a win each. Ćorić’s came at the 2020 US Open.
“I don’t have much to lose. I have done everything that I could this week and more than I expected, so I’m just going to go out there and enjoy my time tomorrow on the court,” he said after his semi-final win.
