Croatia’s Donna Vekić has reached the final of the women’s singles at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The 28-year-old from Osijek will play for the gold medal on Saturday after yet another amazing performance on Thursday night in Paris.

Vekić beat Slovakian Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the semi-final today in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the final.

It is the first time in history that a Croatian has reached the final of the singles at the Olympics.

“I have no words. I cant believe it. I am so happy. This was one of my main goals, perhaps the biggest, I had since I started my career. I took it point by point and didn’t try to think too much ahead,” a happy Vekić said after her win.

“My goal is to win gold but regardless I will enjoy the final on Saturday.”

It has been a fantastic week of tennis from Vekić, who won a marathon three-set match last night against Ukraine’s Marta Kosttyuk.

Vekić also beat world number two Coco Gauff in the round of 16.

The Croatian has carried on her great summer form into the Olympics. Last month she achieved her best performance at a singles major is reaching the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships.

Vekić will play Zheng Qinwen from China in the gold medal match on Saturday after Zheng upset Iga Świątek in the semi-finals.
