Buzzing beyond summer – mosquito season in Croatia getting longer

In Croatia, mosquitoes used to be a familiar summer nuisance, buzzing around on warm nights.

But recently, things have changed: new species are appearing, and these pesky insects now seem active far beyond the summer months.

With the arrival of different mosquito types, Croatians are facing an extended “mosquito season” like never before.

“I have insect screens on my windows, which help at night when we keep the windows open. But during the day, we and the children are constantly going in and out of the house, and because of that, we still end up with mosquitoes inside. Now it’s the end of October!

And they’re still quite active, I must say,” a Zagreb resident, told Jutarnji list.

They asked Ivan Cizelj, the director of Zagreb Zoo, what exactly is happening and why there are more of these buzzing insects around at this time of year than before.

He explains that warmer weather is certainly in their favour.

“Moreover, in recent years we have seen various mosquito species that weren’t here before. Some are more active in colder weather, some fly close to the ground, while others are so small they’re barely visible.

Each of these species has its own niche and behaves differently.

I was in Dubrovnik a few days ago, where it was 23 degrees Celsius—ideal for mosquitoes. The southern part of our country practically has a mosquito season all year round,” Cizelj pointed out.
