Camino of Southern Istria set to open

Camino of Southern Istria launched

In recent years, Croatia has emerged as a significant destination on the global pilgrimage map, offering travellers a unique blend of historical, cultural, and spiritual experiences.

Among the pilgrimage routes gaining traction is the Camino South Istria route, a collaborative endeavour crafted by the South Istria cluster, comprising the Tourism Boards of Pula and Vodnjan, along with the Municipalities of Fažana, Ližnjan, Medulin, and Marčana.

This pilgrimage route, set to join the existing Camino routes, promises an enriching journey through the picturesque landscapes and rich heritage of South Istria.

Spanning 193 kilometers, the Camino South Istria route winds its way through the territories of two cities and four municipalities, inviting pilgrims to immerse themselves in the charm of the region.

It presents a compelling reason for visitors to extend their stay, offering ample opportunities to explore the area’s treasures, particularly in the periods preceding and following the peak tourist season.

In alignment with European pilgrimage traditions, the route will be distinguished by the iconic bright yellow stylised scallop shell, symbolising St. James, set against a deep blue backdrop, said the Tourism Board of Pula.

Divided into seven pilgrimage chapters or stages, the route is designed to be completed within a week, allowing pilgrims to fully absorb the historical, cultural, and sacred heritage intertwined with the breathtaking natural landscapes and captivating urban vistas of South Istria.

The opening of the Camino route of Southern Istria is set for Saturday, 4 May along the path from Vodnjan to Fažana.

Every pilgrim embarking on the Camino South Istria route will be provided with a Camino Pilgrim Passport, also known as a Credencial del Peregrino. This document serves as a testament to their journey and enables them to collect stamps along the way, each bearing motifs and colours emblematic of the region.

These stamps, totalling 18 in number, serve as tangible mementos of the pilgrim’s progress and experiences throughout the route.

Upon completing the pilgrimage, pilgrims will receive the esteemed Compostela Certificate, issued by the Confraternity of St. James – Croatia.

This official document not only acknowledges the completion of the pilgrimage but also commemorates the spiritual and personal growth achieved along the journey. Pilgrims can obtain their Pilgrim Passport and Certificate from the tourist information centres of the South Istria cluster, as well as other designated locations listed on the official web portal.
