People in Croatia, especially those in rural areas, will soon have the opportunity to view one of the year’s most brilliant meteor showers.
The Perseid meteor shower, known locally as “Suze Sv. Lovre” (Tears of St. Lawrence), is one of the most impressive astronomical events visible from Earth.
The Perseids have been observed annually for at least 2,000 years.
This year, the ideal time to watch this shower is during its peak on the night of Sunday, 11 August, and the early hours of Monday, 12 August.
There again will be viewing events at various locations, including Zvjezdano selo Mosor near Split.
You don’t need telescopes or binoculars to enjoy the meteor shower. Simply lie on the ground and look up with your unaided eyes.
It is recommended to spend at least 30 minutes in darkness beforehand to let your eyes adjust.
For the best viewing conditions, find a spot away from city lights and light pollution with a clear view of the sky.
