It has been confirmed that Guantanamo Express, one of the aircrafts used by the US government to move prisoners internationally, was grounded in the southern Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik for 2 days back in 2005.
Officials at Dubrovnik airport confirmed that the plane arrived from Kartun in Sudan on 23 April 2005, before flying out to the US two days later on 25 April. The reasons for the 2-day visit to Croatia have not been revealed, but the visit was enough to put Croatia on the list of countries that the CIA used for secret operations in a recent UN report.
“I don’t know what you want me to say? That the CIA plane transported secret prisoners so they could keep them locked up in Croatia? I think that is impossible. Where in Croatia could they take them without anyone knowing, so it’s secret? It sounds a bit crazy to me. What we confirmed, we said, I repeat, we have never tried to hide anything,” said the Director of the Dubrovnik airport at the time Tonci Peovic.
