22 January 2019 – Pawel Pawlikowski’s film Cold War, which was filmed in the Croatian city of Split in 2017, was honoured with three Academy Award nominations on Tuesday.
Cold War was nominated for in the best foreign-language film and cinematography categories, while Pawlikowski surprised many with his nomination for best director.
The jazz-infused black and white romantic drama, which stars actress Agata Kulesza, takes place in the 1950s with the story set in Poland, Berlin, Paris and Split on the Croatian coast.
As well as Split, parts of the film were shot in Poland. Approximately 20 Croatian film professionals worked on the project including actors Dražen Šivak and Slavko Sobin, while line production was provided by Kinorama (Zagreb).
Pawlikowski, most known for his Oscar-winning film Ida, began shooting Cold War, a Polish-French-British co-production, at the beginning of 2017.
The three Oscar nominations are the most in history for a primarily Polish-backed production.
