Croat Velibor Krpan has become the commander of the largest container ship in the world, the Marco Polo, which was built-in Daewoo in South Korea for French company CMA CGM.
Krpan, from Rijeka in Croatia, is at the helm on the gigantic 396 metre long ship which is 54 metres wide and has a capacity of 16,200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). The ship is the first in a series of three, which will all be built-in Korea and be named after famous world explorers.
The second ship in the series, Vasco de Gama, will also be commanded by a Croat, Captain Igor Sikic, who hails from the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka. To cap off the trifecta, another Rijeka Captain is also said to be lined up to command the third boat, the Zheng He.
