Croatia boosts national identity and global image through sport

ZAGREB, 25 February – The Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has signed a cooperation agreement with five major sports federations to promote Croatia’s sporting successes, strengthen national identity, and enhance international relations through sport.
The agreement was signed at the Ministry’s headquarters by Minister Gordan Grlić Radman and the heads of the Croatian Football Federation (HNS), Croatian Basketball Federation (HKS), Croatian Handball Federation (HRS), Croatian Volleyball Federation (HOS), and the Croatian Water Polo Federation (HVS).
Also present was Josip Pavić, State Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.
Strengthening Croatia’s global image through sport
Recognising the impact of international sporting achievements on Croatia’s global recognition, the agreement outlines cooperation in key areas, including:
Promoting Croatia through the successes of its athletes and national teams on the global stage.
Showcasing national identity, culture, and tradition through sport.
Encouraging sports development by creating favourable investment conditions, hosting professional events, and supporting various initiatives.
Supporting Croatian athletes and organisations via diplomatic missions, collaboration on EU funding opportunities, and joint international events.
Minister Grlić Radman highlighted Croatia’s extraordinary sporting success, stating: “Croatia is a global sporting phenomenon. These five team sports have brought numerous Olympic, World, and European medals, boosting the country’s reputation and bringing joy to our people.

This agreement will further strengthen Croatia’s identity and international image while supporting our athletes and fostering investment in sports.”
Sports diplomacy as a key to success
State Secretary Josip Pavić emphasised the role of sport in promoting Croatia internationally. “Sport is undoubtedly Croatia’s greatest ambassador.
This agreement lays the foundation for sports diplomacy that will benefit both athletes and our country’s reputation. It is great to see such strong unity among federations and athletes, which gives me confidence in the success of this initiative.”
HNS President Marijan Kustić echoed these sentiments, pointing out Croatia’s unique sporting achievements. “We are the only country in the world currently holding World Championship medals in three major team sports – football, handball, and water polo.

These successes are vital for Croatia’s global reputation, and it is encouraging to see the government recognising the value of sport and athletes.
