Croatia is number one n Europe when it comes to having the most places to swim with excellent quality water, data from the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) revealed.
Eurostat on Friday published data on the share of coastal bathing sites in Europe with excellent water quality with Croatia number one on the list.
According to the report, some 99.2% of bathing sites monitored across Croatia were judged as excellent. This means they were mostly free from pollutants harmful to human health and the environment.
The latest test in Croatia revealed that Lika-Senj, Zadar and Šibenik-Knin counties were three counties where the results of tests at all measuring points showed that the sea is of ‘excellent’ quality for swimming.
Behind Croatia in second place is Malta, with 96.6% of bathing sites monitored judged as excellent. Greece was next with 95.8%.
“The indicator measures the number and proportion of coastal and inland bathing sites with excellent water quality. The indicator assessment is based on microbiological parameters (intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli).
The new Bathing Water Directive requires Member States to identify and assess the quality of all inland and marine bathing waters and to classify these waters as ‘poor’, ‘sufficient’, ‘good’ or ‘excellent’,” Eurostat said.
