Croatia ranks in top 3 holiday spots for Bavarians

Croatia is making waves at the f.re.e tourism fair in Munich, the largest international travel event in Bavaria, held from 19 to 23 February.

The Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ) is showcasing the country’s diverse and high-quality offerings, positioning it as a top choice for German holidaymakers, especially Bavarians.

“Croatia stands out at the f.re.e fair as a destination that offers value for money, safety, variety, and top-notch service,” said Tonči Glavina, Croatia’s Minister of Tourism and Sport, who visited the event.

“German tourists, particularly from Bavaria, make up the largest share of visitors from Germany. According to the latest survey conducted at the fair, Croatia is among the top three destinations Bavarians plan to visit this year. Interest is high, bookings are looking good so far, but we need to keep our prices competitive.”

The f.re.e fair features 1,000 exhibitors from 50 countries, with this year’s partner region being Bayerischer Wald, a popular holiday spot in Lower Bavaria. Research from the fair shows that 29% of Germans pick Bavaria as their top holiday destination, followed by Italy, Austria, and Croatia as the leading international choices for Bavarians.

Nera Miličić, director of the HTZ office in Munich, added, “Croatia holds a strong position in the market. We’re recognised as a quality destination, which keeps our guests coming back. Germans value sustainability, affordability, and safety when choosing where to travel—areas where we shine.

Our presence at this fair, along with stronger promotional efforts, will encourage visitors to explore not just our coast but also inland areas, especially in the pre- and post-season.

Feedback from our Bavarian partners has been positive, and I’m hopeful interest will grow despite economic challenges.”

During the fair, key meetings took place with major partners like Lufthansa, Dertour, and I.D. Riva Tours. Discussions were also held with Bavaria’s tourism minister, Michaela Kaniber.

Croatia’s stand welcomed Vladimir Duvnjak, the Croatian Consul General in Munich, too. With around 160,000 visitors expected, the event offers a packed schedule of presentations, performances, and tastings, giving a flavour of Croatia’s rich cultural heritage and culinary delights.

Alongside HTZ, 26 Croatian co-exhibitors—including hoteliers, agencies, transport providers, and tourist boards from regions like Istria, Kvarner, Split-Dalmatia, Dubrovnik-Neretva, Zadar, Šibenik-Knin, and Lika-Senj—are showcasing what makes Croatia special. With its blend of stunning scenery, warm hospitality, and affordability, it’s no surprise Croatia is a Bavarian favourite.
