Croatia secures spot in Davis Cup World Group

The Croatian men’s tennis team has taken an unassailable 3-0 lead against Lithuania in the Davis Cup World Group I match, played in Varaždin this weekend.

With this victory, Croatia has guaranteed a place in the highest tier of the prestigious team tennis competition, set to take place in February next year.

The third point for Croatia was secured by Mate Pavić and Mili Poljičak, who defeated Edas Butvilas and Vilius Gaubas in the doubles match, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 today.

In the opening match of the tie on Friday, Borna Goja have Croatia a 1-0 lead when he beat Vilius Gaubas in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

Duje Ajduković then made it 2-0 for Croatia in the second match.

He faced Edas Butvilas and after winning the first set 7-5, the Lithuanian would level at one set all before the Croatian would win the last to take the match 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.

Although the outcome of the tie has been decided, one more singles match will be played in Varaždin, with Duje Ajduković playing Vilius Gaubas.
