On the back of 18 points from player of the match Maja Poljak, Croatia took out a thrilling two and a half hour 5-set match against the fancied Japanese 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 15-8).
Senna Ušić with 17 points, and Samanta Fabris with 15 were Croatia’s other standouts as they collected an important two points. The victory was Croatia’s fourth win at the championships, after they beat Argentina, Tunis, and Germany earlier. Croatia now face the powerful Chinese side tomorrow.
