In response to the evolving geopolitical landscape and security concerns in Southeast Europe, Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo have strengthened their defence cooperation by signing a trilateral declaration in Tirana.

Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Ivan Anušić is on an official two-day visit to Albania, where he held meetings with Albanian President Bajram Begaj, Defence Minister Piro Vengu, and Archbishop Arjan Dodaj.

He also met with Kosovo’s Defence Minister Ejup Maqedonci.

The main highlight of the visit was the signing of a key declaration by the three defence ministers, aimed at reinforcing regional security and stability, particularly in Kosovo.

The declaration paves the way for enhanced cooperation in defence capabilities, military industry partnerships, training, joint exercises, and the fight against hybrid threats. It also expresses full support for the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Albania and Kosovo, Croatia’s Ministry of Defence said.

Minister Anušić emphasised the importance of adapting to new geopolitical realities by strengthening existing alliances. “We recognise the security risks in Southeast Europe, especially in the context of Ukraine. This initiative builds on our 35 years of independence and our experience as a NATO and EU member,” he stated.

He also highlighted the long-standing friendship between Croatia, Albania, and Kosovo, noting that their cooperation is based on mutual interests and a shared commitment to regional stability. The declaration is open for other NATO and EU partners to join, further expanding the coalition.

The Defence Ministers of Albania and Kosovo reaffirmed their commitment to preserving stability in the region, particularly in Kosovo. Minister Anušić expressed hope that more nations will join the initiative, further strengthening political and defence ties in Southeast Europe.
