Croatia to have official state maps by 2034

ZAGREB, 2 April 2025 (Hina) – By 2034, Croatia will have a complete set of official state maps thanks to a major aerial mapping project.

The Croatian Parliament has approved a long-term programme to create detailed and up-to-date geographical data for the entire country.

The programme, running from 2025 to 2034, will include aerophotogrammetric imaging and LIDAR aerial surveys.

These advanced technologies will provide precise topographic data and help create official state maps at various scales, including 1:25,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000, and 1:250,000.

State Secretary Dunja Magaš from the Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction, and State Assets highlighted the importance of the project.

“These updated geospatial data will be crucial for urban planning, crisis management, environmental protection, and sustainable development,” she said.

The project will be led by the State Geodetic Administration, with a total budget of €36.8 million (including VAT). Of this, €28.5 million will come from the state budget, while €8.3 million will be financed from other sources, including EU funds.

The LIDAR imaging part of the project will be funded through a World Bank loan.

MPs stressed the significance of up-to-date maps, particularly in emergency situations.

HDZ’s Ante Babić pointed out their importance for responding to natural disasters like floods and earthquakes, while HNS’s Predrag Štromar welcomed the real-time access to data through online services.

The new mapping programme is expected to improve spatial planning and disaster response while providing crucial data for both public and private sectors.
