The Croatian National Bank and the Croatian Mint have issued a new collection of gold and silver coins dedicated to the Halubajski zvončari (Halubje bell ringers), one of Croatia’s most iconic traditions, recognised as UNESCO-protected intangible cultural heritage.
For centuries, Halubajski zvončari have marched through coastal villages dressed in sheepskin, wearing striking masks and carrying large, loud bells around their waists.

Their ritual is believed to bring fertility, ward off evil spirits, and preserve a unique cultural heritage passed down through generations.
Historically, zvončari were strong young men who paraded through villages to introduce themselves and seek a future wife. Villagers eagerly welcomed them, as their arrival marked the start of spring farming and livestock preparations.
Today, the tradition is still going strong, with 250 adult members and 150 children under 15 as part of the Halubajski zvončari association, ensuring the custom continues for generations to come.

To further honour this tradition, the Croatian Mint has produced an exclusive collection of coins, available from 18 February 2025, in three editions:
1-ounce gold coin (€100)
1-ounce silver coin (€4)
5-ounce silver coin (€8)

The 1-ounce gold and 5-ounce silver coins feature detailed colour elements representing the zvončari in their full glory. The design is the work of talented artist Chiara Principe, who collaborated with the Croatian Mint and the Halubajski zvončari association to capture the strength, rhythm, and symbolism of this ancient tradition.

1-ounce silver coin – 2,000 pieces
