Croatian Christmas traditions take centre stage in Geelong, Australia

On Sunday, 8 December 2024, the Croatian Cultural Association (CCA) of Geelong in Australia hosted its annual Family Christmas Lunch.

The event brought together members, friends, and families to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, Croatian traditions, and family values.

The Association was honoured to welcome several distinguished guests, including: Ms. Ella George MP, State Member for Lara, who highlighted the importance of preserving traditions and language, Mr. Tomislav Butković, President of the Croatian Community Centre, and representatives of the Bendigo Community Bank Lara, North Geelong Warriors, and HKUD Lado Geelong.

Entertainment was provided by HKUD Lado Geelong’s small group, who delighted attendees with traditional Christmas songs, spreading festive cheer.

Traditional Croatian Cuisine

A highlight of the day was a cooking presentation by Snježana Demo, who shared her recipe for Brza Orahnjača (Quick Walnut Roll).

Her engaging demonstration included valuable tips and showcased her exceptional passion for Croatian cuisine.

A silent auction featured beautifully crafted traditional Croatian cakes, biscuits, and gingerbread houses donated by talented community members, including Đurđica Gnječ, Lilly Špoljarić, Julie Marinović, Ljuljana Krstičević, and Sanja Došen.

These generous donations upheld the tradition of supporting the community through culinary heritage.

Fundraising Success

Thanks to generous bidders, the Association raised $1,173, which was donated to the St Vincent de Paul Society’s 2024 Christmas Family Appeal. This contribution will bring hope to families in need within the local community.

Since its inception nearly 20 years ago, the Croatian Cultural Association has been dedicated to preserving Croatian culture and supporting both local and international causes.

Their initiatives include:

• Assisting Croatian families in Australia.

• Supporting Holy Family Primary School’s Croatian language days.

• Contributing to earthquake and fire appeals in Croatia and Australia.

• Sponsoring the North Geelong Warriors Senior Women’s Team.

• Raising funds for organisations such as Beyond Blue and the Cancer Council of Victoria.

The Association also published a bilingual cookbook, My Mother’s Kitchen, featuring 165 recipes and 495 photos, which celebrates Croatian culinary traditions.

The CCA extends its gratitude to the Croatian Community Centre for hosting the lunch and to its sponsors, including Community Bank Lara District and Decor by Mira, for their generous support.

As the Croatian Cultural Association approaches its 20th anniversary in 2025, it reflects on two decades of fostering community, preserving culture, and giving back.
