The BBC has highlighted 12 of the world’s most fascinating abandoned buildings, featuring an intriguing location in Croatia.
The list, curated by Ikumi Nakamura and her Project UrbEx, showcases the beauty and history of these forgotten places.
Her new book, Project UrbEx, documents her explorations with stunning photographs of derelict, decaying, yet strangely beautiful locations around the globe.
Among the 12 unique sites listed is the Kupari tourist complex, nestled in the village of Kupari, part of the Župa dubrovačka area.
This former military tourist resort was severely damaged during the Croatian War of Independence, leaving behind an eerie reminder of the past.
From a distance, the Kupari complex along Croatia’s stunning coastline resembles a typical Mediterranean holiday destination. However, as Nakamura notes, the scene is deceptive: “You won’t find any tourists here. When civil war tore Yugoslavia apart in 1991, Croatian police took over this area, warships besieged the bay, and this beautiful resort became rubble in the twinkling of an eye.”
Once a bustling vacation spot, the Kupari hotels now stand silent, with only the occasional crash of falling debris breaking the stillness. The site, frozen in time, serves as a haunting testament to the region’s turbulent history.
