Croatian government declares Day of Mourning after school knife attack

ZAGREB, 20 December 2024 (Hina/CW) – The government held an emergency session by telephone on Friday afternoon and declared Saturday, 21 December, a Day of Mourning in the Republic of Croatia in response to the tragic attack on students and staff at “Prečko” Primary School in Zagreb.

The Day of Mourning will be marked by the mandatory lowering of the Croatian national flag to half-mast on all buildings housing state government bodies, local and regional government offices, and buildings where legal entities are based or conduct their activities, as well as premises where individuals carry out independent work.

On the Day of Mourning, entertainment events are prohibited. Television and radio broadcasters are required to adjust their programming to reflect the solemnity of the occasion, particularly by airing content appropriate for the observance of the Day of Mourning.

Earlier this morning, shortly before 10 a.m., a 19-year-old man attacked people at”Prečko” Primary School, injuring a teacher and several students.

Tragically, a seven-year-old child lost their life in the attack, while five other individuals were injured, including three children and two adults.
