Croatia’s Mirjana Lučić-Baroni has caused the upset of the US Open on Friday when she knocked out world number 2 Simona Halep of Romania…
Lučić-Baroni (32), who entered the main draw at a qualifier, came from a match point down to beat the word number 2 in straight sets 7-6, 6-2. Lučić-Baroni’s rise has been an incredible one and today’s victory is her best since she made the Wimbledon semi-final in 1999. She will play Sara Erani, who upset Venus Williams, for a place in the quarter finals.
“It is amazing. It is such a great win, I knew what I had to do and I just played aggressive. I have been around a long time and I keep my nerves. She is an amazing player but I knew I had the game that would make it tough for her. I am so proud of myself,” Lučić-Baroni said after the win.
The 119th ranked Croat pocketed over 200k USD after her win today, more than won all of last year.
