Migrant workers in Europe last year sent a total of 110 billion USD back to their countries across Europe. Despite a large number of migrant workers in Europe from Africa and the Middle East, most of the money was sent from the wealthier European countries to poorer European nations, the International Fund for Agriculture and Development (IFAD) said in its report, entitled “Sending Money Home: European flows and markets”.
Europe has only 10 percent of the world’s population but 20 percent of all migrant workers and makes 25 percent of all remittances.
“European migrant remittances supported 150 million people around the world last year, which is the population of France and Germany combined,” said IFAD’s president, Kanayo Nwanze.
Last year 80% of Croatia’s workers’ remittances from abroad came from Europe, totalling 1.524 billion USD, according to data from the World Bank.
