Croatian Women’s Handball star Ivana Lovrić has escaped a jail sentence. Lovrić was sentenced on Wednesday in a Zagreb court to a 18 month suspended jail sentence for running over and killing a pedestrian in the capital last year.
Lovrić (28), who was a star for Croatia at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, hit a pedestrian at a zebra crossing before continuing to drive off as the 33-year-old victim lay on the ground. The injured women, who was a mother of three, later died as a result of injuries. Lovric turned herself in to police a half an hour after the accident.
“I have sincere and deepest regret. I’m sorry that it happened. I do not remember the accident, but since that day when I learned that I took someones life, my own life has drastically changed. The very fact that I killed a young person, and all the circumstances that followed before and after, will be my burden for the rest of my life,” said a tearful Lovrić before sentencing. Lovrić’s sentence has been suspended for five years and she also must pay court costs of 21,100 kuna (3,000 EUR), reports Jutarnji list.
