What do Vedran Corluka, Blanka Vlasic, Dino Radja, Slaven Bilic, Mirko Filipovic, the Zaninovic sisters, and Janica and Ivica Kostelic have in common? Besides being current or former elite Croatian sportspeople, they have all at one stage in their career been treated by their own blood.
The process, known as Autologous Conditioned Plasma Injection, is a recent medical procedure whereby a patient’s blood is injected into an area of the body for the purposes of healing it.
The new treatment method has become more popular in the past few years with athletes around the world, but more so in Europe as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is hesitant to approve the treatment, although the anti-doping organisation has not placed the treatment on the doping list.
It is not only sport stars turning to the treatment method, famous actress Penelope Cruz and director Oliver Stone are known have used their own blood to heal injuries.
