Heroics from Croatia’s latest teenage tennis sensation was not enough to give Croatia an upset win in the Fed Cup tennis play-off against Poland in Israel on Saturday.
Ana Konjuh (15), who is fresh from winning the Australian Open Junior singles and doubles title in Melbourne, caused a massive upset in the first rubber of the tie, defeating the world number 37. Urszula Radwanska 2:6, 6:3, 7:6. Favourites Poland managed to come back as Agnieszka Radwanska beat Donna Vekic and then Agnieszka teamed up with her sister Urszula to beat Konjuh and Darija Jurak in the deciding doubles rubber 6:2, 6:4.
It had been a successful week in Israel for the Croatian team, topping their group with wins over Austria, Belarus and Georgia, but it is Poland who go through to the World Group.
