Croatian town named top ‘hidden’ destination in 2024

Primošten

A small town on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast has been recognised as one of Europe’s best-hidden gems by European Best Destinations in 2024.

This charming town of Primošten, that was once an island and is located between Šibenik and Trogir on the Dalmatian coast, secured third place on the list.

Before the 16th century, Primošten was a peninsula separated from the mainland. It is believed that its inhabitants built a causeway to connect it to the mainland. 

Thanks to its unique shape, and the fact that it has one of the longest beaches in Croatia, the town has become a ‘hidden gem’ for tourists, The Sun writes.

Despite its tranquillity, Primošten offers enough attractions to satisfy those who enjoy the liveliness of larger tourist destinations.

Visitors to Primošten should not miss the Old Town, known for its gates, a remnant of the old defensive walls. A labyrinth of narrow streets leads to the Church of St. George, which is considered the highest point in the town and was built in the late 15th century.

This church is one of the most significant landmarks in Primošten. Another important viewpoint is located on Gaj Hill, where visitors can see the 17-metre-high statue of Our Lady of Loreto, built in 2017, and one of the tallest statues of its kind in the world.

The town is also renowned for its picturesque spots, including the statue of the Fisherman with a Cat, symbolising everyday life in Primošten.

Primošten is also known for its beach, boasting more than 19 km of coastline. Mala Raduča Beach offers bars, restaurants, and various water sports, and is one of the longest beaches in Croatia.

Primošten is also famous for its gastronomic offerings, particularly the red wine Babić.
