ZAGREB, 30 Sept (Hina) – Croatian students won two medals at the Hippo “English Without Borders” Olympiad, an international competition which promotes the knowledge of English language and which took place in Assisi, Italy, on 23-26 September, bringing together 250 finalists from 60 countries.
Marta Markešić, a student of the Bjelovar Elementary School, won the gold medal in the category of seventh and eighth-graders, while Helena Kosina of the Vladimir Becić Elementary School from Osijek won the bronze in the category of sixth-graders.
Sixteen Croatian students had qualified for the competition in five out of seven age groups, including Ivano Radić of the Pučišća Elementary School, who won the first place at the European championship, held in late May in Lido di Jesolo, Italy.
The world English language championship in Assisi, organised by the non-profit organisation Global Hippo Association, was preceded by school, national and continental competitions.
Croatia is ranked 11th worldwide for English proficiency among countries where English is not the native language.
In 2023, Croatia achieved an EF English Proficiency score of 603, placing it in the ‘very high proficiency’ category.
The city of Zagreb ranked third among all cities evaluated.
