Voting for the European Tree of the Year competition has officially begun, with Croatia among the 15 finalists.

Croatia’s entry this year is the historic ‘Freedom Tree’ from the island of Rab.

Located on Pjaceta, also known as Freedom Square, the holm oak was planted on 23 April 1921 to mark the departure of the Italian military.

Over the past century, it has grown into an iconic part of Rab’s landscape and cultural heritage.

For generations, locals have gathered under its sprawling branches, sharing stories and traditions. Many families on the island still pass down tales of their ancestors who helped plant the tree.

A few years ago, the community came together to celebrate its 100th anniversary with a grand event.

Now, the Freedom Tree is representing Croatia in the European Tree of the Year contest, which highlights trees with unique stories and deep connections to their communities.

This year marks the 14th edition of the competition, with 15 countries taking part.

Voting is now open online until 24 February at www.treeoftheyear.org, where people can support Croatia’s entry in the hope of securing the title.

The winner will be announced in March, and Croatia is hoping that the Freedom Tree’s rich history and cultural significance will earn it recognition across Europe.
