Croatia’s LADO in Mexico for first time

Croatia’s LADO Ensemble is travelling to Mexico for the first time. As Croatia’s only national professional folklore ensemble, this artistic institution has toured nearly the entire world during its 75-year history.
In Mexico, LADO will present concerts and workshops, marking its first visit to the country and strengthening cultural ties between the Republic of Croatia and Mexico.
LADO’s international visit to Mexico will feature two dance performances and one vocal-instrumental concert, as well as three different types of workshops.

The first concert will take place on 10th October 2024 at the Cultura UNAM Festival in Mexico City, followed by a vocal-instrumental performance on 11th October.
These events will showcase some of the most iconic and representative pieces from LADO’s rich repertoire.
The ensemble will also attend the opening of the exhibition “Croatian Emigration to Mexico: The Journey to a New Home,” which highlights the heritage and beauty of Croatia among the Croatian diaspora in Mexico.

The exhibition is organised by Laura Martin del Campo Steta, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Croatia in Mexico, to whom LADO extends its gratitude for her assistance in organising this international visit.
The highlight of LADO’s visit will be its performance at the 52nd Cervantino Festival in the city of Guanajuato, one of the world’s largest international festivals.
The event brings together thousands of performers from around the globe, showcasing a wide range of art forms, including classical music, jazz, contemporary dance, theatre, and circus arts.

At the Cervantino Festival, LADO will present its signature dance concert. Croatian Ambassador to the USA, who also oversees Mexico, Pjer Šimonović, will attend the performances.
To further strengthen cultural ties, LADO will engage with the Mexican audience through workshops and presentations. On 16th October 2024, a presentation of traditional Croatian instruments will take place at the Faculty of Music at the National University (UNAM), alongside traditional singing workshops at the National Conservatory of Music and dance workshops at the National Folk Dance School.
The following day, 17th October, the LADO Ensemble will meet with the Mexican national ensemble, Ballet Folklórico de México.
This significant meeting will celebrate the rich folklore traditions of both countries, highlighting common elements such as embroidered patterns and themes sung in various folk songs.
LADO’s visit to Mexico is significant for enhancing international cooperation and positioning LADO as a unique cultural “product” on the global stage.
