Playing in the main draw for the very first time at Wimbledon, up and coming teenage Croatian tennis player Ana Konjuh (16) has won her first round match at the All England Club on Monday…
Konjuh, ranked 188th in the world, was too good for world number 66 Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, winning in three sets 6:3, 4:6, 6:0 in just over one hour and a half. Erakovic, who was born in Croatia before moving to New Zealand in the mid-90’s, had no answer for Konjuh’s power and was forced into a number of errors at crucical times throughout the match. The win was Konjuh’s first ever Grand Slam victory, after she lost her debut match at the Australian Open earlier this year. The former junior world number one, and US and Australian Junior Open winner will face the winner of the Sam Stosur – Yanina Wickmayer match in the second round.
