Discover Lika’s beauty at the Croatian Walking Festival

Lika is gearing up for the sixth edition of the Croatian Walking Festival.

The festival begins on 31st August in Otočac and will conclude on 1st September in Gospić.

Traditionally held on the first weekend in September, the event is marked on many participants’ calendars from around the world up to a year in advance and is also registered in the official calendar of the International March League (IML).

This sports and recreational festival has become a favourite among walkers, and Lika has established itself as one of the most attractive destinations.

The largest groups of walkers come from the Netherlands, Germany, and Taiwan, joined by numerous local participants who proudly express their love for this unique event. Under the patronage of the International March League (IML), the Walking Festival brings together enthusiasts from across the globe.

Ivan Radošević, Director of the Lika-Senj County Tourist Board, stated: “We hope to break attendance records this year. People come to us from all corners of the world, and the number is increasing every year.

This is a great opportunity to promote tourism in Lika and throughout Croatia. After an active weekend in Lika, most participants stay a few more days to explore the beautiful surroundings, which is excellent for tourism development and promoting the beauty our region offers.”

Participants will have the opportunity to walk the “Gacka” route in Otočac and the “Tesla” route in Gospić, which combine the beauty of one of Europe’s cleanest rivers and the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest innovators.

This two-day walk will allow visitors to experience Lika’s stunning nature, cultural landmarks, and the enjoyment of the cleanest air.

The routes are designed for all fitness levels, offering options of 10+, 20+, and 30+ kilometres. On the first day in Otočac, participants can choose from three paths of different lengths, providing beautiful views of the Gacka River. On the second day in Gospić, routes of the same lengths are available, but with a completely different experience, including a visit to Nikola Tesla’s birthplace.

Organisers recommend participating on both days for a complete and unforgettable experience.

In addition to walking, participants can enjoy entertainment programmes in the city centres, featuring musical performances and culinary delights. Transportation between Otočac and Gospić is provided, allowing participants to relax and fully enjoy the festival.

“We are delighted that this unique sporting event is held in Croatia and that Lika is the host for numerous IML walkers who follow these events worldwide. The routes cater to all fitness levels, offering choices of 10+, 20+, and 30+ kilometres, so everyone can select the one that suits them best,” said Mile Milković, Secretary of the Croatian Walking Festival.

The Croatian Walking Festival is a unique event that encourages people to move, live healthily, and spend their free time actively. The motto “Every minute you spend walking can extend your life by one and a half to two minutes” is the best invitation for everyone to join in and do something good for their health while enjoying nature and good company.

We invite everyone interested to join this unique event in the host cities of Otočac and Gospić. Walking the routes named Tesla and Gacka, participants will have the chance to enjoy the natural and cultural beauties of Lika and make new friends and memories.
