31 October 2021 – Croatian tennis player Donna Vekić has won her third WTA career singles title on Sunday in the Italian Alps.
The 25-year-old Osijek native beat No. 5 seed Clara Tauson of Denmark in the final of the Courmayeur Ladies Open in straight sets, 7:6, 6:2.
Vekić started strong and broke Tauson early in the match to race out to a 4-2 lead. The Dane would break back and force the set into a tiebreak which the Croatian would take comfortably 7-3.
The second set was all Vekić as she broke twice to race to a 4-1 lead and would close out the set and match to win her third WTA title.
Vekić won her first career WTA title in 2014 at the Malaysian Open. Her next title came in 2017 when she won the Nottingham Open.
The No. 97 was in great form all week, beating three opponents from China before beating No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini in the semi-final.
Today was Vekić’s first final since June 2019 in Nottingham.
