After a rocky preseason, which saw him come under fire from fans after West Ham were knocked out UEFA Europa League contention, Slaven Bilić has answered his critics in the best possible way on Sunday…
Bilić copped criticism during the week after he fielded a weakened side for the return leg of West Ham’s UEFA Europa League qualifier which resulted in the Hammers being knocked out, but on Sunday the fans were again chanting his name when he led his side to a openeing weekend victory over title-contenders Arsenal.
It was a dream Premier League debut for the former Hajduk Split coach, getting one over Arsene Wenger at the Emirates stadium. Goals either side of halftime from Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate gave Bilić’s side an upset 2-0 win. It was West Ham’s first win over Arsenal since April 2007.
Bilić, who appeared 54 times for the Hammers, signed a three-year-deal with the club in June.
