One of most popular tourist destinations in Croatia is expected to turn over around 500 million euros once the season is done and dusted, according to estimates from tax authorities.
The region of Dubrovnik on the southern Dalmatian coast has enjoyed a bumper season, with one of its many peaks happening this week. On Monday Dubrovnik welcomed 50,000 visitors, 20% more than the city’s population, as a record 6 cruise ships docked in. Along with the 16,000 tourists from the cruise ships, 19,000 tourists were staying at accommodation providers in and around the city.
“Only Miami, Barcelona, Venice and Istanbul can service that many visitors (cruise ships) in one day,” said Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahušić at a press conference yesterday, as he thanked those who made it possible without distractions to normal day life in the city.
“We showed that we can provide quality organisation, and the days when Dubrovnik locals stayed in whenever there was a mass influx of cruise ships is behind us,” Vlahušić said.
