For the 1,053rd consecutive year, Dubrovnik will honor its city feast day, Sveti Vlaho (St. Blaise), on February 3, 2025.
First celebrated in 972, the feast day of St. Blaise, the city’s patron saint, holds a prominent place in Dubrovnik’s history.
St. Blaise, originally from Sebaste in Lesser Armenia (then under Roman rule), was a compassionate doctor devoted to helping the poor and sick. After becoming the Bishop of Sebaste, he was martyred in 316, suffering brutal torture and execution on February 3.
Recognized as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, the festivities will also be observed by in the United Sates.
San Pedro in Los Angeles will once again also join in the celebrations. On Saturday, February 8, 2025, the Libertas Foundation will host the traditional Sv. Vlaho/St. Blaise Gala Dinner.
This annual event will include a festive dinner and live entertainment, with performances from St. Anthony’s Kolo Group, Petra Tulic and Roko Blazevic, as well as a special guest from Croatia.
The celebration will take place at the Croatian American Club, located at 631 W. 9th St., San Pedro.
Tickets for the event are $100 for adults and $50 for students and children. The evening will raise funds to support humanitarian efforts and promote Croatian culture.
The Libertas Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization based in California, has been dedicated to helping those in need since its founding in December 1991 during the attack on Dubrovnik.
It started by sending food and supplies to help people in Dubrovnik and later expanded its efforts to support various humanitarian causes, such as rebuilding churches and assisting hospitals.
The foundation also set up a scholarship fund in 2002 to help students facing financial difficulties. Today, the Libertas Foundation continues to serve the community, organizing events like the St. Blaise feast, bringing Croatian culture to the forefront, and helping those in need.
