The folk costume of the Croatian island of Susak, featuring Europe’s only traditional skirt that reaches above the knee, has been immortalised on a new set of gold and silver numismatic coins.
Released as part of the “Croatian Heritage” series, these coins celebrate the island’s vibrant cultural legacy, showcasing its distinctive attire with intricate coloured details and honouring one of Croatia’s most unique traditions.
The island of Susak is renowned for its unique folk costumes, particularly the vibrant attire worn by women and young girls.
Pink is the dominant colour in these traditional outfits, with silk blouses decorated with ribbons, lace, metal threads, and glass beads.
The distinctive rose-colored skirt, called a kamizot, gains its width from layers of undercuts, while a matching pink apron, socks, and leather shoes complete the ensemble.
Notably, the women of Susak wear the shortest folk costumes in Europe, a tradition that has captured the attention of many, especially during the island’s annual summer festival when expatriates, many now living in the United States, return to celebrate their heritage.
The beauty of Susak’s folk costumes was celebrated in a new way this summer, with the release of gold and silver numismatic coins as part of the “Croatian Heritage” series.
The one-ounce (31.103 grams) gold coin, limited to just 200 pieces, and the two-ounce (62.207 grams) silver coin, of which 400 are available, both feature intricate coloured details that honour the craftsmanship of these traditional outfits.
The obverse side of the coin displays a map of Susak, along with Cape Darto and its well-known chapel, while the reverse showcases the ceremonial Susak folk costume in all its glory.
These coins are available for purchase through the Croatian Mint’s online store and selected sales partners, offering collectors and enthusiasts a beautiful tribute to this unique corner of Croatia.
