ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) – A statue called “Father and Son” by Zvonimir Orcic and Josip Cvrtila in honour of Vukovar commander Petar Kacic and his son Igor Kacic, who was the youngest victim killed and buried in the Ovcara mass grave, was erected on Monday in Vukovar.
“This is yet another in the many tragedies of Vukovar – Petar Kacic, the defence commander of the Sajmiste suburb and his 16-year-old son Igor Kacic, who is the youngest victim of Ovcara, who was killed because he was a Croatian and because his father was one of the commanders. We erected the statute in their honour but also in honour of all those who fell in the Homeland War, particularly in the Sajmiste area,” Vukovar Mayor Ivan Penava said at the unveiling ceremony.
Mrs Irena Kacic, Petar’s wife and Igor’s mother attended the unveiling ceremony and on that occasion said that everyone will be able to see the statue and pay their respects to all the fathers and sons who gave their lives in the Homeland War.
Petar Kacic was killed on 2 October 1991 while his son, aged just 16, was killed at the execution site at Ovcara, and was the youngest victim found in the Ovcara mass grave.
