A unique tourist and culinary manifestation in Croatia, “What our ancestors ate”, or “Kaj su jeli naši stari”, will be held for the 41st time this weekend in Vrbovec, north-east of the Croatian capital Zagreb.
PIK Vrbovec, which, as in previous years, supported the event, invites all those interested to visit this unmissable event from August 26 to 28 in the Vrbovec region, which, in addition to a rich gastronomic offer, also offers an interesting cultural and entertainment program for all ages.
The guardians of heritage and tradition will serve dishes in indigenous houses that connect the history and gastronomy of Vrbovec with their names. “Early lunch”, the traditional breakfast from Vrbovec, will be prepared by women’s associations, while restaurateurs from Vrbovec and the surrounding area will prepare carefully selected menus called “Lunch from grandma’s pot” over all three days.
This year’s food of the event, which brings back the past with its taste, is pumkin, from which members of thirteen women’s associations will prepare dishes for judging, and prizes for the best dishes will be awarded by famous culinary chefs Tomislav Špiček and Marko Lučić, head chef of PIK Vrbovac.
Lovers of sweets will be delighted by the selection of old-fashioned sweets, from dry cakes, gibanica, štrukli to the inevitable Vrbovečka pere, a favourite dish of the event and a guaranteed traditional specialty.
PIK Vrbovec has made sure that, in addition to a diverse gastronomic offer of dishes and homemade drinks, visitors are also welcomed by a rich cultural and artistic program, various exhibitions, children’s shows, interpretive walks, historical tours, workshops and sports competitions, and for good entertainment adapted to a wide audience, among others Let 3, Halid Bešlić and Slavonske Lola will take care of it.
The event “What did our old ancestors eat” this year, apart from the general sponsorship of PIK Vrbovec, is held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, and is organised by the Tourist Board of the Town of Vrbovec.
